'His Name was Ben' Book Review

His Name was Ben
Paulette Mahurin
Publishing Date: September 21, 2014

Book Description

Hearing the words “it’s cancer,” threw Sara Phillips’ life into chaos, until an unexpected turn of events and a chance encounter with a stranger changed everything—his name was Ben. Based on real events, Ben and Sara discover that when all else fails, healing can come in the most unexpected ways. Chilling and heart wrenching, His Name Was Ben is a triumph over the devastating circumstances and fear experienced when faced with a terminal illness. In this narrative, the power of love conquers shadows and transforms the very nature and meaning of what it is to be fully alive. From the award winning, best-selling author of, The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap, comes a story filled with soul and passion that will leave the reader thinking about it for days after the last page is closed.

My Thoughts

“His Name was Ben” was such a beautiful story. I was really touched by the characters and their situation. It is a story of heartache, pain, and tragedy, but it also showcases the love, hope, and strength that such pain can bring out in a person. Not only did I believe this story was amazing and the characters so strong, but it was written brilliantly.

I related to this story on a personal basis as well. My mother went through Cancer treatment in 2013 and the diagnosis was grim, reading ‘His Name was Ben’ brought back a lot of those feelings and experiences.  I think anyone with a big heart will love this story and I believe it can be a really big eye opener for many who don’t have very much personal experience with Cancer.

This story is full of love, hope, faith, and trust. It’s a heart wrenching story that is ultimately beautiful in its despair. The characters were relatable and believable, the writing was on point. The backgrounds of these characters made their story even more potent.

An amazing read and I recommend it to everyone; you might want to get yourself a box of tissues to go with it though.  J

Twisted Book Review

Twisted
Lola Smirnova
Publisher: Quickfox Publishing
Publication Date: January 26, 2014

Book Description

Back in the 90’s, the corrupt post-Soviet Ukraine with its faltering economy, is thrown into a devastating depression. Times are hard.

Three naïve young sisters – Natalia, Lena and Julia - dream of a better life, and weigh their options: do they stay and struggle like their parents, or join scores of their compatriots in the sex trade in glittering western European cities, who earn in a night what they’d take several months to earn at home?

For sensible, resilient and calculating Lena and Natalia, the transition to the underworld of Luxembourg’s deceptive champagne bars is eye-opening, but smooth. But for fragile, brittle Julia, haunted by a childhood assault, the change is more than just vocational. Struggling to adapt, she turns to alcohol and drugs, exposing herself to increasing danger and depravity; and, ultimately, betrayal, when a deceitful client, who claims to love her, drugs her and cleans her out.

Despite her sisters’ best efforts to intervene, she finds herself in Istanbul – culturally a world apart – in an attempt to make back the money and self-respect she’s lost. Vulnerable without the protection of Luxembourg’s champagne bars, she descends into a hell of drugs and high-risk sex until, at the novel’s terrible climax, a kidnapping, brutal assault and one-sided justice system lead to her imprisonment and a threat of deportation.

How will Natalia and Lena save Julia?

Based on factual events, Twisted is a pacy and gritty story of vulnerability, courage and the art of making a living in the sex trade.

My Thoughts

‘Twisted’ was definitely a fitting title for this book. ‘Twisted’ is also based on real life events. To begin my review I wasn’t to say I am terribly sorry that anyone has to go through these twisted events. I am glad that someone decided to share their story.

I think ‘Twisted’ was well written, it gave a lot of information in a short period of time so for me it was a fast read. I think the dialogue could use some polishing and just a tad bit more character development was needed. However that didn’t ruin anything in the book for me.

I will say this book is not for the faint of heart. There are explicit sex scenes and drug use. So if you cannot handle that, then this book is not for you. I believe this book was done very well and I found it very interesting. It’s definitely a book out of the norm; that might be why I liked it even more. ‘Twisted’ is a fast paced, captivating read. It is an interesting read and an eye opener. I hope to see more work from Lola, I am most definitely a fan.

The War Within Book Review

The War Within
Tye Shirelle
Publisher: Self
Publishing Date: August 2, 2014

Book Description

Faced with a heinous betrayal by the person she loves the most, Kira's illness spirals out of control. Lack of treatment surrenders her to reckless behavior and uncontrolled actions. Can she ever forgive Avery for her treachery? Will Avery be able to get passed Kira’s reaction and love her enough to fight to repair the damage their relationship endured? Can they keep their family together?

Mature Readers Only**
Graphic and Explicit Content**

My Thoughts

‘The War Within’ was an intriguing, touching story about love and heartache. Kira, one of the main characters suffers from bi-polar disorder. This story follows Kira during some of her best times. Kira’s mother suffered from bi-polar disorder, which caused a very rocky childhood for Kira. This was a story of love, loss, hardships, betrayal, and suffering.

I thought the book was well written and told a very touching story. I thought Avery and Kira were both interesting characters. However I thought some of the dialogue could use a little work. Some things the characters said were a bit immature and didn’t sound right coming from grown women. Aside from that I thought it was a good story, it had a lot of dynamics when it comes to the characters and how the story moves along.

Kira is ultimately a woman who doesn’t feel like she belongs at all, even though she is surrounded by three people who love her and she had two beautiful children. Kira struggles with her disorder and the daily struggles of life.
Not only was this a good story but it brought awareness to bi-polar disorder. Which is always good, it is always good to be educated about struggles our fellow Americans are going through and to discuss the pre conceived notions about disorders such as this.

Her Final Sleep Book Review

Her Final Sleep
Joe DiCicco
Publisher: Vamptasy Publishing
Publishing Date: September 21, 2014

Book Description

The hard rock band Her Final Sleep are not only beautiful, they are incredibly talented. They have the small town of Pine Lake completely enamored, but some say they hide something evil in their old house just outside of town. Kyle Van Velt and his friends are about to have a run in with Her Final Sleep, with disastrous consequences.

My Thoughts

‘Her Final Sleep’ was a very well written, tantalizing, paranormal thriller. I really enjoyed the way ‘Her Final Sleep’ was written. There were a lot of different characters in this book but to me they all played a key part in the story. This is a very difficult thing to accomplish, when you have so many characters.

I would have liked to see a bit more of an explanation of where this bad ‘thing’ came from and what it ultimately wants.

I did think it was a fresh take on paranormal mysteries. It was a very entertaining story and I liked the characters and the way the story unfolded. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Soulless By Amber Garr Book Review

Soulless
Amber Garr

Book Description
When it comes to death and love…only one is guaranteed.

Four decades ago Nora died. A tragic event for someone so young; however, four decades ago Nora was also given a second chance to walk among the living.

A Death Warden with a mysterious past, her job is to escort the newly expired towards the light, battling with the Soul Hunters who want the freshly dead to help with their own evil purposes buried in the dark.

When Nora’s charges suddenly become targets, she realizes that the hunters are after far more than just souls. A shift in power between good and evil threatens to change everything, risking the lives of the only family Nora has ever known.

Devastated and angry, she’s forced to face the man she once loved - a man who chose darkness over her - in order to find the answers she needs to stop the horror from escalating. Yet, while a lost relationship still haunts her broken heart, a new Warden with secrets of his own will enter the mix and quickly alter everything Nora believed to be true.

Death is unavoidable…but sometimes, so is love.
My Thoughts

‘Soulless’ by Amber Garr was a thrilling, captivating, and exciting read. Once I started this book I found it hard to put down. The story of Nora and the Warden’s was really intriguing. It is a really cool idea that this is what happens after death, you become a Warden in a beautiful new world and you help souls cross over. This was a really intriguing idea to me, I have read several books about Grim Reapers but this was totally different and really fresh.
There is the typical good and evil in this one but, there is the fresh turmoil of a soul caught in the middle. Theron is neither completely good nor completely evil and he plays such a vital role in the plot and is probably one of my favorite characters in the book.
I think Nora is a very relatable character and I really enjoyed her finding her heritage, I thought that threw a nice little loop in the story. I don’t know anyone who would not like Jason, he is so warm and inviting, I just want to hug him.
I think the plot line was laid out perfectly and I believe it was done very well. The ending was completely unexpected and definitely left me wanting more.  I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to see the continuation of it! Another fantastic read from Amber Garr!

Dreams of Perfection Book Review

Dreams of Perfection
Dreams Come True Book One
Rebecca Heflin
May 5, 2014

Book Description

Best-selling romance writer Darcy Butler is holding out for perfection in the form of her own carefully-crafted heroes. Once blissfully engaged to be married, Darcy’s post-traumatic commitment phobia is depriving her of the very thing she wants most: her very own happily-ever-after. Now, here she is just six months shy of her thirtieth birthday, and not a Prince Charming in sight.

Successful lawyer Josh Ryan is the boy-next-door with a soft spot for the less fortunate, and Darcy’s best friend without benefits. Darcy often comes to him lamenting her love-life, or the lack thereof, whereupon Josh patiently doles out his sage advice. Problem is Josh is in love with Darcy.

But when Darcy finds herself looking into the handsome face of the man who graces the cover of her soon-to-be-released novel, she’s convinced her dreams of perfection have come true. Or have they?

My Thoughts

Definitely one of the best romantic plots I have ever read. I really enjoyed the fact that Darcy was a romance author, and yet she couldn’t get her love life together. It just goes to show that sometimes reality and fiction really don’t mix. However in this book she meets a man right out of one of her novels, no literally one of her heroes has miraculous turned up in her life, but Darcy quickly finds out that sometimes Mr. Perfect can be just too perfect.

I really liked Darcy she reminded me of some aspects of myself and she had a fun personality and cute quirks. Josh absolutely cracked me up, he’s so adorable. I really liked Josh, he was probably my favorite character and was very relatable down to earth guy.

I liked the way she wrote this book, it was very upbeat, her characters are vibrant and they come alive on the pages and keep you very interesting.

Yes the plot does have an ending you see coming but I didn’t really mind that because the plot kept you intrigued. There was not a dry moment in the book and that is really hard to do especially if your readers know what’s coming. I give Rebecca major props for that one, it is a task that is not easily done but she did it flawlessly.

One of my favorite lines in the entire book is “Ah, the woes of the super-rich.” I don’t know why but that stuck in my mind and made me double think a few things.

Another thing that I really liked was that the Blake mystery was never entirely figured out, she hinted at things that might have happened but she leaves it up to the reader to make their final decision about Mr. Perfect, I have my theories and when you read it, I would like to hear your opinion on what you think happened. Other than that I will keep my mouth shut about what I think happened!

I really deeply enjoyed this book and I think the plot was rather fresh and interesting, I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a new and fresh story!

Four years have passed since I left home, my parents, and my brother Asher behind – since I shut out my past.
And Erin. Four years since I last saw her, since I heard her voice and held her in my arms. I’ve spent my time forging a path from woman to woman, from bed to bed; trying to find an answer. But I think I’ve lost my way. There’s no light at the end of the dark.
No big surprise. I carry the dark inside me. I’m a bastard – branded as such from the start. I never give my phone number and address; I take my pleasure and don’t come back for seconds. No commitments; no promises and no happy endings. Yeah, I’m a bastard down to the bone and I don’t give a damn.
But now I’m back in my birth town, the town I fled at eighteen – back to make amends to the brother I abandoned and watch from afar the only girl I’ve ever wanted. Hope isn’t a currency I can afford; I learned that lesson long ago.

 EXCERPT:

“Why?” I blurt out, to break the spell.

“Why what?” his voice rumbles, low and deep, sending shivers skittering over my skin.

God. I can’t let his face, his scent, his body take away my reason. I came here to talk. “Why did you leave four years ago?”

His mouth flattens and he shoves his fingers through his unruly hair. Those broad shoulders roll in a shrug.

That’s it? He thinks he’s off the hook that easily? No way. I push off the counter and get into his face—well, I crane my neck and almost rise on tiptoe, but it’ll have to do—and grab a fistful of his T-shirt. “Why didn’t you tell me you were going? Why didn’t you ever call? Where were you, for chrissakes?”

“What do you care?” he says, so quietly I’m only sure he spoke because I’m looking right at his beautiful mouth.

My grip on his T-shirt tightens. “Are you seriously asking me this?”

“You told me I should go and never come back.” His eyes close briefly, and a pang goes through my chest. “That I was a bastard and an asshole and wasn’t worth the trouble.”

Christ. I let go of him and take a faltering step back. I did say those things, didn’t I? “I’m sorry.” My hormones played havoc with my feelings back then, intensifying every feeling. “What about you? Why did you leave instead of talking this out? I never got a chance to tell you I’m sorry, you just…” I bite my lip and let out a long breath, but it catches in my throat.

Maybe he hears it because he reaches for me and trails his thumb down the line of my jaw. The gesture stills me completely as his dark eyes nail me. I see sadness there, and fear. What is he afraid of?

“I had to go,” he whispers and his hand drops away.

“You left town, Tyler. Left everyone and everything and nobody knew where you were. God, I was so worried.” My throat constricts; I can barely swallow.

“You were?” There’s a hitch in his voice, as if he doesn’t believe it.

“Yes, I was.” I’ve been so afraid for him for so long, I can hardly believe he’s here, alive and well. I reach up and slide my hand over his chest. It’s hard; solid. “Why, Tyler? Tell me why you left.”

“I don’t wanna talk about it,” he grinds out.

I want to bang my fist on his chest and slap his face. My fingers curl against the soft fabric of his T-shirt, and I feel his muscles clench underneath.

“Screw you,” I whisper and I hope my voice won’t break and betray me. “That’s all you have to say to me? I’m not going to—”

“You’re so beautiful,” he whispers.

Shocked into silence, I stare at him. His gaze is moving over my body, a hot, silky glide that steals my breath. His pupils are dilated, making his eyes look black.

I try again. “After all this time, I just want to know—”

His hand hooks around my back, pressing me to his body and he bends his head toward me, dark hair falling in his eyes. His mouth descends on mine, sealing the words inside.

The world falls away with a murmur as he kisses me. I gasp and his tongue pushes inside, tangling with mine. He licks at my mouth, and he tastes so good—like dark chocolate and pepper. Familiar. Thrilling. Sexy.

I want more. I slide my arms around his hips and kiss him back. His chest vibrates against me as he moans and then he drags me closer, until my breasts are crushed against his firm abs.

A tiny voice at the back of my mind is screeching in protest—this shouldn’t be happening, we should be talking, explaining, finishing this off—but it’s drowned in the rushing of blood in my ears, the thundering beat of my heart. His smell, his taste, the feel of his muscular body, it sends waves of scalding heat over my skin, through me, tightening the tips of my breasts, starting a pulse between my legs. I cling to him as I burn from the inside out; I desperately need him—need to feel him around me, against me, inside me. Everywhere where he’s been missing for so long.

Book Review

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this book and the way it was written. There were so many things going on between the characters that it was like a big puzzle that you slowly piece together. I really liked figuring out more and more about these characters and with the way it was written, you figure out some pieces without her even writing them.
The names of her characters I adored, I am a total sucker for unique names.
The scenes between Erin and Tyler were hot with a capital H.O.T! It was clear that these two characters had some steamy chemistry. I loved their plot, the tortured, tragedy of their past and all that time wasted because they both blamed themselves.
It was a very addicting, captivating story.
Tyler is your brooding, ‘I’ll never be good enough’, bad boy and we all know how much we love these bad boys.
The only thing I would have liked to see is more dialogue between Erin and Tyler early on and I wish when Erin revealed her big secret that it would have been just her and Tyler. I felt like having everyone present was a bit impersonal.
Overall I really like this book, I though the writing was done very well and I really enjoyed the characters and the different dynamics they added to the plot.
I would recommend this book to romance, erotica, and mystery readers.

BACK IN BUSINESS BABY!!

Back In Business!!!!

Hello all my lovelies! As you all know I have been off the grid for a while. A lot has been going on in my life, I am still going to school trying to get my degree, and working full time. One of the main reasons I took a break from this blog was because I was planning my wedding. So as you can imagine juggling all those things wasn’t working out too well for me. Wedding planning is extremely stressful but definitely worth it. The good news is I am ready to get back on here and bug the heck out of you with my random incessant ramblings and of course reviews of some great books! I have already received a ton of requests so I will be working through them, although I am not going to stress myself out about it again. I do have a life outside of the blog so please be patient with me. I work over 40 hours a week, I go to school full time, I have a house to maintain, I have to focus on my own writing, and a husband (yes husband finally J) that I need to spend time with, so I am back but I will be on as much as possible!

So as I said before I was planning my wedding, on June 7th, Aaron and I finally tied the knot J I shall post some pictures below so you can see. I can definitely say I was a happy bride, everything went according to plan (there were a few bumps in the road, but there always are) and it was a beautiful day. I can honestly say I have never felt more beautiful. That day and the week that followed were pure bliss, I couldn’t have asked for a better man, I am so proud to have this man as my husband and I am one lucky girl. He really takes such good care of me. I am here to tell you don’t settle nobody is perfect but there is that one person that is perfect for YOU! I am so happy that I found my other half!

In other news, not only am I back to bring you news of new events and books coming out, as well as my thoughts on those books but I have really big news.

I have been a writer myself for years but have never really done anything with it. Now I have decided to give it a go, I want to share my stories with you guys as so many authors before me have done. I currently have a short story named ‘You’re Still the One’ coming out in an anthology later this month! I am so excited for this chance and so excited for you all too finally get to read some of my own work! Although I am really nervous as well, I am stoked for you guys to meet some of my characters! I am also working a novel that will be the first installment of a series called ‘The Rockstar Chronicles’ so please stay tuned to check on the progress of it.

Thank you to all my followers for keeping me going and checking out my blog. Thank you to all the authors that give me the chance to participate in sharing their stories and for having the patience of saints when I am running a bit behind. Thank you to all of you for making this possible.

That is really all I have to say at the moment except for

Baby I’m back in business!!!

Wedding pictures ;)

I'm sorry if i disappointed anyone but I really need to do this for myself. this is goodbye for now hope to resume my love soon.
