Intangible Review

Intangible
J. Meyers
Publishing Date: January 31, 2012
ISBN: 1230000010329
Genre: Paranormal/ Young Adult

Book Description:

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they've helped those in need on the sly. They've always thought of their abilities as being a gift.

Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they've always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke's ability? He's always right.

And he can't do anything about it.

My Thoughts:

‘Intangible’ is an amazing story. Sera and Luke are classic characters. I dare you to read this book and not fall in love with this brother and sister pair. Sera and Luke are gifted twins; they keep their gifts a secret. Not even their parents or closest friends know what they can do. The reason for that is because they don’t know where their gifts came from or why they are so special. They hide it in fear of being considered freaks and being cast out. However little do they know they have much bigger problems to worry about. Evil being already know who they are and are determined to destroy them before they can fulfill their prophecy.

I absolutely loved this book Sera and Luke were amazing characters, I thought they were written beautifully and I believe a lot of readers will connect with these characters.

One of my favorite characters though was Fey. I loved her personality and her role in the plot.

This was one of my favorite paranormal, young adult reads of this year. I enjoyed the plot immensely, I read through ‘Intangible’ quickly because this story sucked me in. I cannot wait to read more about Sera and Luke and simply more of J. Meyers work.

‘Intangible’ was a great read, full of drama, action, and love. It was beautifully written and very detailed and creatively unique. A masterpiece for J. Meyers!

MEAN: A Psychological Thriller Novelette Review

MEAN:  A Psychological Thriller Novelette
Renata F. Barcelos
Publishing Date: August 12, 2012
ISBN: 978-1479102815
Genre: Psychological Thriller

Book Description:

Cassandra Connelly looks like a normal twenty-four-year-old girl. She seems sweet and shy. She works hard in two jobs and still finds time to do volunteer work. Nonetheless, there's something wrong within her. She has a lot of anger boiling inside, and a very problematic past, making her a dark, twisted woman. She hides her true self from the world, but there's someone Cassandra hates so much, she has been thinking of doing something unspeakable: killing this person. To her, killing this person is absolutely necessary, for he or she should not be alive. However, since she is still not sure about doing it or not, she seeks help.

She goes to a psychiatrist in order to make a decision: should she continue hiding her meanness and being a normal girl, or should she let the meanness win and kill this person she believes deserves to die? In this contemporary piece of fiction, we'll find out how badly child abuse and a dysfunctional family can transform a life for worse, much worse.

Mean is a novelette (longer than a short-story but shorter than a novella).
ADVICE: CONTAINS VIOLENT SCENES AND HARSH LANGUAGE

My Thoughts:

‘Mean’ totally blew me away. This novelette was so filled with entertainment. It’s the story of a young woman who is turning to the help of a psychiatrist because she thinks this meanness inside of her is going to take over. The story is told in her point of view and the doctor never speaks in the book. It is simply Cassandra’s twisted mind speaking, a one sided book. From the very first doctor’s session the story was crazy. It just took off and was filled with such a crazy story, with twists and turns, that I couldn’t stop reading it. I mean this girl’s life was truly insanity at its best.

I read through this novelette very quickly. I just couldn’t wait to see what Cassandra decided to do.

Then at the end, wow, what a shocker, I did not see that coming. I expected it to be something crazy but not THAT crazy. It was pure brilliance, I really loved this story. It was one of my favorites this year. I just found all of it fascinating.

Great writing and a great job for Renata!

Boyfriend From Hell Review

Boyfriend From Hell
E. Van Lowe
Publisher: White Whisker Books
Publishing Date: August 30, 2011
ISBN: 978-0983632900
Genre: Paranormal/ Young Adult

Book Description:
Fifteen year-old Megan Barnett and her single mom, Suze, have a special relationship--they are friends, close friends, who do almost everything together. "But come on, guys, she's my mother... Can I really tell her that while we're snuggled up on the sofa watching Spider Man Three, I'm secretly undressing James Franco with my eyes? Of course not..." The special bond takes a turn for the worse when Suze decides to start dating again. She hasn't had a man in her life since Megan's father left ten years ago. Enter two mysterious young men, Megan's new classmate, sinfully attractive bad boy, Guy Matson, and the dangerously handsome art dealer, Armando. Before long Megan and Suze both wind up in steamy relationships. But neither of the handsome pair is quite what he seems. In fact, one of them is Satan, with his sights set on a new bride. Megan has precious little time to figure out how to stop him. If she doesn't, either Megan or Suze are quite literally going to HELL. "Boyfriend From Hell" is the first book in the Falling Angels Saga from the author of the gruesomely hilarious, "Never Slow Dance With A Zombie."

My Thoughts:

‘Boyfriend From Hell’ was a very fun, comical, thrilling story. I thought it was a great refreshing read for the young adult genre. There are a lot of paranormal reads out there for that genre. It is a very hard thing to do to stand out nowadays among the masses. With that being said, I think this book stood out very well on its own. It added a comical element to such a serious dilemma, I really enjoyed that.
I also appreciated the fact that the characters act their age. Yes they may be fighting against the great forces of evil but they are still teenagers. So yes they are going to still have immature moments and I think that a lot of Young Adult novels lack that element. They make their characters a bit more adult like than they really are. This book gives the kids someone they can relate to.

The only downfall of this book for me was I seen a lot of resemblance between the main character in this book and the main character in ‘Never Slow Dance with a Zombie”. They act very much alike and have the same temper tantrums. So I would’ve liked to see just a little more difference in their attitudes and dynamics.

Other than that I really enjoyed this book. The plot was great, very crazy, intriguing and the writing was great.

Underdog: The Pelican Bay Hunger Strike Review

Underdog: The Pelican Bay Hunger Strike
Glenn Langohr
Publisher: Lockdown Publishing
Publishing Date: March 1, 2012
Genre: Non-Fiction

Book Description:

The California Prison System houses a mixture of Mexican cartel members, Mexican mafia, Bloods, Crips, and thousands of other street gangs fighting for control and the author turns this story into a pulp thriller of true crime.

The author of Underdog, Glenn Langohr, takes you on a journey back into prison as he remembers a prison riot days before his release date where he left his friend on the way to Pelican Bay...

The story follows the author years later as he visits his friend in Pelican Bay during a prisoner developed hunger strike against sadistic and cruel guards who get off on their isolation and enjoy adding violence to their torture.

A spotlight on the flaws at how Pelican Bay determines gang validation and solitary confinement.

My Thoughts:

‘Underdog’ was a great insight into what was going on in Pelican Bay Prison, especially during the hunger strike. It was very upsetting to see how they were treated. I mean it was completely out of control and I think Glenn did a great job comparing it to how dogs are mistreated and caged up.

‘Underdog’ was well written and very informative. It also held your attention very well because it was very intriguing and written brilliantly.

Glenn knows what he’s talking about from first-hand experience and it shows in his writing. There is a certain flair in the writing of a book if the writer truly experiences it.  I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read more from Glenn Langohr and see what other stories he has to tell!

Penthouse Man Review

Penthouse Man
Kea Noli
Publishing Date: September 13, 2012
ISBN: 147933661
Genre: Psychological Thriller

Book Description:

An evil sister. A lingerie party. A letter.
The Penthouse Man devastates five women.

The psychological thriller starts during a lingerie party in a penthouse on Sydney Harbour.

The party ends when Trix reads a letter from the Penthouse Man. A relationship between two sisters is destroyed.

My Thoughts:

'Penthouse Man' was one of those stories that I read in one night in one sitting. It was such a fast paced read, I couldn't put it down, I had to see what the outcome would be. From the moment I started the book it was a roller coaster ride. There were so many suspicious things happening and it was all a big mystery. I really liked the characters and the way the story played out. I think the characters were written brilliantly they really fit the story. I loved the plot and the twists and turns, they keep you on the edge of your seat. This is definitely not one of those book that you can figure the ending out as you go along. It truly is a surprise. It's a great climatic read. I enjoyed Kea's way of writing I think it was very unique.

This story was a great story of family betrayal and drama. It's a ' you never know what's going to happen' kind of book.

Steph is a pretty dramatic character and I think people will react to her in different ways. I think she is a perfect type of charcter to make this story pop. A wonderful job by Kea Noli and I loved this book!

Blood Awakening Review

Blood Awakening
Wenona Hulsey
Publisher: Wenona Hulsey
Publishing Date: July 7, 2011
ASIN: B005BQY68A
Genre: Suspense/Fiction

Book Description:

Nicole, a small town Alabama girl, and her best friend Kat take a weekend trip to Panama City, Florida. Kat looking to have a good time and Nicole hoping to escape the pain of losing her mother for a little while. Little did Nicole know, the escape would awaken a ancient power that is hidden in her blood. A power that evil wants for its own and will do whatever it takes to have it.

This short story is a look into best friends', Nicole and Kat, life before a centuries old grudge and Nicole's emerging powers rips them apart. A power that Nicole wants no part of as it brings her to her knees and forces her to walk away from her small town life and everyone she loves.

 My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this short story. From the very first page this story had me. It was very intriguing. I like how it is spread out in a series, so that you really have to read the next one to find out more. Some series out there today are pointless and the books don’t flow together. This series flows and I think the way it is written makes it more enticing. ‘Blood Awakening’ is a very unique read and I really loved it. I was captivated by what was happening and yet I am still waiting to see what the reason for it is. So I will definitely have to continue reading this series.

‘Blood Awakening’ kept me guessing to the very end and even though it was a short story it was action packed. It told enough of a story to hold its own of course it needs a follow up novel but that was clearly the intention. I really enjoyed the plot and the way the characters spoke to each other. I cannot wait to read more from Wenona Hulsey. I think paranormal fans will love this book. A great job by Wenona!

De Ann has a flair for writing poetry and it really shows in this book. I feel like in these poems, she opened up and gave us a glance into her deepest most heartfelt thoughts.

She did a great job picking the poems to put this compilation together. They flow very well together. The poems themselves are beautiful, deep, and heartfelt and they really help you get to know the author. I have never been a big poetry reader simply because it just didn’t click with me but I really enjoyed this book and De Ann’s poetry. I think she did a wonderful job with this book and poetry readers will love it!

Lancaster House Book Review

Title: Lancaster HouseAuthor: Taylor Dean
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Self Published
Number of Pages: 304

Book Description:

Are you ever really alone?
Zoe Grayson needs a change. So, she moves to another state, purchases an old, dilapidated 1920s Victorian Mansion, and sets out to restore it to its former glory. As she begins the restoration, she finds herself falling in love with the old house . . . not to mention its illustrious builder, Mr. Lancaster. Zoe becomes obsessed with the house as she discovers its secrets; hidden rooms, secret passageways . . . and a mysterious man who seems to think the house is his. Who is he? More importantly, how does he live in her home unseen and unheard?

The unexpected answers leave her reeling—and questioning everything she’s ever known. To her dismay, Zoe’s actions land her in the local psychiatric hospital, scheming for ways to return to Lancaster House . . . and the love of her life.

My Thoughts:

When I started reading ‘Lancaster House’ I thought it was going to be your typical ghost story / haunted house type deal. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This book was about a man wronged in loved and suffering eternity for it. His life hanging in the balance for something he did which seemed justified to me.

It also about the woman who buys Lancaster House and wants to restore it to its original beauty, she is in love with the house and falls in love with its secret tenant as well. The only question is will she be able to handle his story or will she lose her mind in the process of restoring the house?

I absolutely adored the story Taylor Dean told in this amazing unique novel. ‘Lancaster House’ took a usually creepy, scary theme and turned it into something beautiful and inspiring. True love cannot be beaten or torn down and that is really the lesson in this book.

Andre and Zoe just give me chills at how beautiful y they are together. Not to mention this story has every wow factor to it you can imagine. Twists and turns like you wouldn’t believe. It was a great adventure and a job well done for Taylor Dean. I absolutely loved it and would recommend it to everyone. A true masterpiece.
